It’s the offseason. Writers are just throwing out hot takes to get attention. Looks like it worked.
I guess so. I don’t usually comment on stuff like this, but this is just such a dumb take.
Lol, one down season and all of a sudden UW sucks again in the minds of some people. Pretty baffling disrespect considering what they did the previous three seasons and the fact the same coaching staff is here with only a few new additions. But idiots in the media often take teams with returning starters at QB over teams without one. One thing I know, UW is going to make it a point to bitch slap Oregon and Cal next season.
I don’t remember the last time Wilner said anything positive about Washington, but this year it’s hard to predict a clear favorite in the North anyways.
Oregon – have lots of momentum and confidence. Favorable schedule probably puts them over the top in the division.
Cal – darkhorse team whose season is entirely dependent on whether Wilcox can reload the defense. If they’re good they get UW and Oregon at home. Hard to predict them being better or worse than anyone right now.
Oregon State – I think predicting them to be good is wishful thinking. Lost Luton who was the key piece for them.
Stanford – will be really young with a lot of turnover. Probably won’t be better or worse.
Washington State – will be a bad team with a terrible defense.
Washington – Like Cal but swap an unknown defense for an unknown offense.
Oregon probably wins the division off of some low scoring games. I think the South wins the conference this year.

Oregon is not winning shit without Herbert and 4 starting offensive lineman from last season, three of which were 4-year starters for them. Any confidence and momentum they think they have will be wiped out early versus Ohio State in their non-conference schedule. They should have one of the better defenses in the conference in terms of their starting lineup, but it won’t be elite like they’re projecting it to be because they don’t have enough quality depth to rotate, especially on the D-line, and true Freshman ILB’s are never ready to play right away no matter how talented one of them is. Offensive line growing pains will have Shough scrambling a lot and their passing game will be inconsistent. When they try to lean on the run game, it won’t be there like it was before and it really wasn’t even all that good for them last season. Their run game got completely shut down at times by ASU, UW, and Wisconsin. UW’s D-line will stuff them upfront next season with the added depth and talent of the RS Freshman being added to the mix. And why is it that people forget they’re installing a new offense under a new OC just like UW is? How is that used against UW as a reason for picking them to finish 4th in the North while ignoring the same thing for Oregon and picking them to win the North?
Cal shouldn’t even be competitive with UW. Only reason they have been is because Justin Wilcox knew Petersen’s playbook on both sides of the ball from his time coaching with him at Boise State. Same with Jonathan Smith last season with that game being way too close for comfort. UW installing a new offense wipes out those advantages Cal and OSU had that allowed them to compete defensively. I expect UW to blow both of those teams out.
I just don’t see how UW isn’t the favorite in the North as long as the new QB isn’t a total shit show which I don’t see how he could be whoever it turns out to be. That’s going to be a serious competition with three really talented QB’s. Whoever wins the job will be a good player for us. My money remains on Dylan Morris.
I appreciate your optimistic outlook. I do agree that their OL will take a big step back. Despite all their hype, Oregon has low-key recruited like shit on their OL. We have DESTROYED them in OL recruiting over the last 3 years. If they end up with Kingsley that will be the only OL recruit that have gotten that we actually wanted over that span.
In terms of them installing a new offense, they deserve credit for hiring the best available OC and not a washed up RB assistant from the second worst franchise in the NFL. Have to give them an edge in scheme until proven otherwise.
And fuck Cal. We should beat the shit out of them. Losing them to them once is an embarrassment let alone 3 years in a row. It took an act of god and the worst UW team in 4 years for them to beat us last year. If we can’t beat Cal this year fire everyone.

I can’t stand myopic fans. BALLZ you might be the worst.Aren’t you one of those who thought replacing 9 defensive starters was going to be no problem for UW but replacing 4 oline starters and QB is a death sentence for Oregon? You want to make an argument Morris or Sirmon, are better than Shough that’s reasonable. but
UW the favorite in the North? Cal is going to be in a better position to challenge for North they clearly are trending up unlike Huskies.

No question replacing 4 oline starters will be a step back for Oregon, continuity will be missing regardless how good their new dudes are.
Their oline class this year looks solid not only are they trending for Kingsley but I noticed they got a crystal ball for Bram Walden another dude with husky offer.

Our last 3 OL classes have been significantly better than theirs during that time frame. Them getting a good class this year isn’t going to help them this season or even for the next 2 or 3. Their OL recruiting has been fine, but for a team with an OL coach as their head guy who’s prowess was always in recruiting I found it underwhelming. We took 3 of the top 4 guys on the west coast this year. That is what recruiting dominance looks like.
This actually worries me as Wilner has been pretty accurate on UW as of late. He was the only one to pick Stanford to win the North in 2017. He called us getting upset at Cal in 2018. He had UW taking a step back and losing 4 games in 2019 as well.
@Homie Holmes
Replacing those defensive starters wouldn’t have been a problem had they played the best players from the jump last season. They replaced Kyler Manu with a fucking RS Freshman walk-on and the defense was instantly way better. That shit was fucking ridiculous and makes me glad Petersen is gone. Even with the mismanaging of talent on defense, UW still finished with the 3rd best scoring defense in the conference. Had they played the obviously most talented players to begin with, they would have had the #2 or #1 scoring defense in the conference with a bunch of young guys playing.
UW is the most talented team in the North and it’s not even close. There is absolutely no reason they shouldn’t win the North. Did one down season also make you forget about all the success this program has had the past four years with less overall talent? UW is the favorite in the North every season until proven otherwise because they’ve earned that respect both on the field and on the recruiting trail. Anybody else winning the North at this point is an upset of UW. This isn’t a 7-8 win program. It’s a 10 win program. One down season doesn’t change that so have some fucking pride and high expectations.

8 new starters on offense including a QB with zero experience and snaps of value under his belt, Donovan as OC, the road games at Oregon/Cal/SC/Utah and we should be the favorite in the North ?
We will find out of Jimmie can alpha and take UW to the next step, or if the culture built under Pete puts a ceiling on the program. I am optimistic and believe the best recruiter and developer of said talent the last 6 years will carry that over as head coach.
UW doesn’t have 8 new starters on offense. Don’t know where you’re getting that from. Newton surpassed Ahmed and was the starter by the end of the season. Bynum surpassed the Senior receivers. Puka was on track to becoming a starter before his foot injury. Only real starters lost were the offensive lineman which is three guys, Hunter Bryant, and Jacob Eason which is a total of five guys. The offensive starting lineup for 2020 will be so much better overall than last season:
QB: ? (Not as talented as Eason but will be an upgrade because he’s a smarter and better football player)
LT: Matteo Mele (started games before, really athletic and tough, NFL guy)
LG: Henry Bainivalu (started games before, powerful body, mauler in run game, plays with a mean streak, NFL guy)
OC: Luke Wattenberg or Myles Murao (Either a solid Senior who finds his best position fit or the next Olin Kreutz)
RG: Jaxson Kirkland (starter since he was a true Freshman, alpha, mauler, NFL guy)
RT: Victor Curne (best feet I’ve seen at UW in my life, blankets pass rushers easily, easily gets to second level in run game, NFL guy)
RB: Richard Newton (way more physical than the previous “starter”, probably 220 pounds next season, NFL guy)
TE: Cade Otton (as reliable as it gets in both the run and pass games, NFL guy)
WR: Terrell Bynum (6’0 190 with 4.4 speed and strong hands, NFL guy)
WR: Puka Nacua (relentless beast, physical 3rd down converter and explosive play maker, NFL guy)
WR: ? (Almost nothing but former 4-star recruits competing for the third starting job, probably Jalen McMillan if he adjusts to the physicality of the college game quickly, all the remaining receivers are 6’2 or taller)
I don’t understand why I’m not supposed to be optimistic about the offense? The overall talent and depth is to the point that it’s hard for any coach to fuck this up. Literally every starter on offense will be an NFL draft pick sooner or later. UW will score points on most of the Pac-12 just by showing up and being more talented. That’s the way college football works. Talent wins as long as you don’t have morons like Clay Helton coaching your team. Jimmy is smart and Donovan was highly recommended and impressed Jimmy in his interview so we’ll be fine there.
Fuller and Baccellia are fucking gone people! We’re done with that stupid shit. Stop having PTSD over those guys and assuming the offense will struggle like it has the past three years with those midgets running around and getting blanketed out there and giving up on plays. Those days are over now. It’s okay to see the light at the end of the tunnel and be happy and optimistic about the offense again.
Gotta agree with ballz on this one. Next year will be addition by subtraction. The next wave of high star talent will finally get a chance to take over after being stuck behind older players (who after seeing this combine) may not have been all that we thought they were athletically.
I am not going to believe the offense will be good until I see it. I am extremely skeptical of Donovan, I don’t know how anyone couldn’t be.
I do appreciate the optimism and I hope you are right. There is not excuse to not have a great offense, but I fear we will find a way.
The difference between Donovan and Chip/Dabo is he has an established track record and it’s not good. Jimmy has a hard on for NFL experience but I question how much valuable experience Donovan was able to gain as a glorified intern for a trash franchise. I hope I’m wrong but it’s an incredibly risky hire.
What makes Donovan even a bigger risky hire is Lake being a first time coach and no experience on O side is probably going to turn the whole offense over to JD.

Agreed. He could have mitigated the risk by hiring a seasoned QB coach and letting Donovan handle the TE coaching duties. Donovan hasn’t been a QB coach since Maryland in 2007 (he was stripped of the title in 2008 and took over RBs). Not only am I concerned about how this will impact the development of our QBs and Sam, it will make it even harder to find a future QB for 2022 and beyond.

Ugh I forgot he is the QB coach. We are so fucked.

Yeah that’s false. His track record is some really good shit at Vanderbilt with lesser talent. That’s what got James Franklin the Penn State job in the first place. Then some struggles at Penn State due to personnel issues on the offensive side of the ball, particularly QB and O-line, followed by being the scapegoat so Franklin could keep his job. Franklin didn’t want to fire him in the first place but he was pressured into doing so by the AD.
If Donovan was just some “glorified intern” for the Jags as you put it, why did three different NFL sources independently recommend him to Jimmy?
For about the 1000x he is rumored to be looking to transfer from Tennessee. This one seems to have more traction from the others though since so many transfers have happened already, the NCAA investigation, and the dagger is the head coach is flying to Cali just to meet with him and his family to convince him to come back next year.
Considering making the trip – assuming fans will be allowed.
Odds that happens?
Positives, negatives discussed along with rants about the AD, our brand, etc.
Is he going to Utah? They’ve been on a tear bringing kids in.
Found this on another site very interesting I wonder he was soo forceful.
