Why do people still think Strauss > Huff?

He couldn’t recruit and his o line got flattened against SC and Bama.

His 2014 and 15 lines went through the same lumps as Huff in 2019.

Again, it was the system, except that our current coach can at least load us up with talent so that all you need is a better scheme. He wasn’t deciding that aspect of the offense.

In 2016, Strauss had some seniors, and had to play Nick Harris at guard in a CFP game because he sucked at recruiting.

Some husky fans seriously lament not having Strauss and say nothing about Pete’s offensive schemes over his coaching tenure here.

It doesn’t seem like much of a debate.

Huff is an excellent recruiter and against the blocking scheme we used.

Someone noted him and Pete got testy a few times late in the season.

I love Scott Huff. Great recruiter and he coaches with intensity. By the way, UW is #1 in the Pac-12 with the least number of sacks given up since Scott Huff has been here. And that’s with a blocking scheme he didn’t agree with under Petersen.

It’s unreal. He’s the only coach that hasn’t needed Petersen to compete with the top recruiters in the conference.

Because Chris is clearly the better OL coach. The OL under Chris were not only technically sound but they worked as a unit. A huge issue with huff’s OL is the miss assignments. I mean go back and watch the last few games of the season when we went up against Oregon State, Washington State and Colorado. You will see countless players being untouched and hitting eason as he throws. There’s a reason why Chris was hired to be the colts OL coach and why Pete tried hard to keep him. I will take Chris over Huff any day of the week. Huff’s OL underachieved in Boise and they have underachieved here as well.

There is a back and forth about this currently on the Podcast of Champions. Oregon fan asked a Q on why Husky fans hated Strausser and like Huff, and made the case for Strausser. A husky fan responded with the case for huff and then the Oregon guy had another response. IMHO Huff is clearly a top recruiter while Strauss couldn’t recruit shit. It’s nice that his 9th choice Recruit worked out in Nick Harris but wish he didn’t start as a true frosh. Anyway, from a performance standpoint, really feels like the OL has never progressed passed average with either huff or Strauss. Maybe 2016 was above avg but I put a ton of that on Jake Eldrenkamp. He was freaking good that year. So to me clearly huff is better. It needs to prove it with all his talent when the season finally happens

Over those three seasons, his O-lines averaged just 12 sacks per season or less than one sack per game. The 2009 Boise offense lead the nation in scoring offense and his O-line gave up just five sacks all season.

He was fucking fired and had he not been fired our O-line would be absolute trash by now if he was allowed to continue to recruit here. Recruiting is 80% of the job you idiot. You can be the best O-line coach in the world when it comes to teaching technique and schemes but if you can’t recruit quality talent, you’re a shit O-line coach at the college level and doomed to fail. Strausser can only be successful long-term at two levels, the NFL and lower-tier college football programs that don’t expect to sign any 4-star recruits. Huff should have been the hire when Petersen took the UW job in the first place. Huff would have closed Alijah Vera-Tucker.

I love Sonics but the “They played as a unit!!!” is such a FS argument when you look at how veteran that O line was, pre-injury Adams as well.

Only weakness was Harris who as a true freshman was not ready for a playoff run and was put in that situation because of the poor recruiting.

If we could have melded Strausser’s ability to develop with Huff’s apparent ability to recruit, last years teams gets the 1 extra score over Oregon and Utah, the Cal and Colorado game aren’t close and we are are 11-1 going into the Pac-12 Champ. game

I have major concerns seeing what I did last year with the OL. To see and hear Millen and others be stunned at their inability to pick up simple stunts and twists game after game, and as Hugh said after the Colorado game “like they had never seen them before” is a huge red flag for me.

My hope is that with the increase in talent and depth across the line that we can simplify the scheme and assignments and just tell the guys you got him go beat him, you got him win the battle, etc etc. How I look at Jaxson Kirkland.

And they were the second best offensive line in the conference and a semi-finalist for the Joe Moore award bitch. Harris and Adams were 1st-team All-Conference. That O-line didn’t suck. People seem to forget what a truly shit O-line looks like. We haven’t had one for a while. Like I said, having a dumb ass playing QB who was trying to throw the ball to three soft midget WR’s would make any good offensive line look bad when he’s holding onto the the ball all day long, has zero pocket awareness, and zero ability to beat a blitz with his arm or his legs.

If that’s true about Strausser than he wasn’t going to work here long term anyways.

Which is why Huff is a far better option for this program. He wasn’t the problem last year.

I don’t think Strauss is this superior coach that prevents blown assignments. I think Pete’s offense was easy to figure out especially wrt the passing game, and the result showed itself on the field.

They gave Huff a raise for a reason.

Also Huff deserves credit for turning Harris into an NFL draft pick since he was his coach for three seasons. He deserves credit for coaching McGary into a first round pick. McGary was good in 2016 but still flawed. He became dominant by 2018 though.
