It certainly appears that Lake is holding on to Donovan to fire him at the end of the season to get another year for himself.
And none of us expect Cohen to pull the trigger unless it is absolute Arameggedon (although I would not rule that out as things can really spiral out of control). I don’t see a certain win the rest of the way – even Arizona which is on the road and a difficult place for even good Husky teams to play at.
The easier games are on the road.
Losing the rest of the games is not improbable.
I understand the financial constraints. What is reasonable to accomplish in terms of firing. For example just Lake and some staff. Buying out the whole staff maybe too much?
Everyone knows we are being set up for Donovan to be the scapegoat.
But Lake has to go or the descent will accelerate given the transfer portal. He hired Donovan and promoted Gregory. Lake is the major problem, sure Cohen, etc are over their heads but Lake is not a head coach and it is clear he will have to be fired eventually.
I know there are two issues buying out a coach and hiring a new one which both cost lots of money. And no one wants Cohen to hire Lake’s replacement but we are in really bad situation and have to look at what is possible and the best way to create a foundation to build on the quickest; or because of transfers and lack lustre recruiting, the program will be in a total talent deficit for 3 to 4 years.
Firing Lake is the most realistic and necessary step and replacing him with a young, energetic Head Coach that is offensively innovative which hopefully could be done financially.
Jamey Chadwell Coastal Carolina
Will Healy, Charlotte
The other name that is outside that profile but would be attractive since he is from Washington is:
Orlondo Steinauer – Head Coach of Hamilton Tigercats in the Canadian Football League. Defensive coach but tough and experienced and not likely too expensive.
And who would have thought Jonathan Smith would look like a God Send at this point.
Tradeoffs have to be managed – if Lake is maintained season ticket sales will collapse and players will transfer.
No one is going to buy firing Donovan and leaving Lake.
Chest’s long shot of Petersen coming back on interim basis maybe the best solution as he assured us things would be in good hands with Jimmy and those are the players he recruited.
In many ways it is inconsistent with what Petersen sells and has sold to the players to sit this out on the sidelines and let this debacle unfold.
