1) Coach Lake specifically consulted with Franklin about both his offense and John Donovan.
2) This is an internet message board a month before the start of the season —- it should be encouraged to theorize on the nature of the offense or anything else.
So, whatever dude…
I think we all realize that the UW thought they had a great chance at getting Kellen Moore..when that fell through they took a longer approach and ended up with Donovan.
Jimmy Lake was clear he wanted a guy with NFL experience because he realize how vital the NFL was in shaping his view of how the game is strategized.
We’ve seen Donavan prior to his stint in the NFL but we haven’t seen him post NFL and that’s cheating him because everything in the NFL is next level sophistication. I’m glad that we was coaching the RB because he was intimately familiar with what the backs and OL were trying to achieve. Frankly the UW running success has largely been based on having exceptional tailbacks like Gaskin. You couldn’t really say it was our blocking because Ahmed came in and couldn’t produce the same numbers. Gaskin did a lot on his own.
I want to Donovan and Huff get together and get the scheme so tight that they OL and RB can play with speed. We know they’re athletic ..that’s all we recruit but they need to play like it and honestly we had good OL players looking confused at times so it didn’t surprise me to here Chest say Huff at times was visibly upset on the sideline. We know Huff can recruit ..now we need to see what he can do when he’s given the keys.
I’ve heard a few podcast talking about taking things slow. No that’s not what you do in your first year. It’s house money. College coaches think there are 31 better college teams including the Boise St team you obliterated in December of last year. The best Husky offense in 2016 didn’t take things slow they said “let me see if you can stop John Ross and Dante Pettis” and teams couldn’t.
As I wrote in the other thread. Opposing Defense do not like defending speed. Donovan has the thoroughbreds all he has to do is get them understanding the scheme and how to run at blazing speed.
Donovan never ran his own offense when he was with James Franklin. It was heavily influenced by Franklin. Franklin didn’t step back and completely give up the reigns to an OC until he hired Moorehead. Donovan wasn’t hired to run James Franklin’s old offense that was shit. He was hired based on what he showed Jimmy Lake on the white board drawing up plays and talking X’s and O’s with him. Yes, Franklin recommended Donovan, but that doesn’t mean Donovan was hired to run the same shit he ran at Vanderbilt or Penn State with lesser talent. Donovan was also recommended by five different connections Jimmy has around the NFL. Donovan no doubt picked up a lot of ideas while he was in the NFL so we don’t know exactly what his offense will look like. But we do know Jimmy wants to throw the ball vertically down the field a hell of a lot more than Vanderbilt and Penn State did when Donovan was their OC so UW’s offense won’t look exactly like either of those offenses.
Sure you can theorize about what the offense will look like. That’s reasonable and encouraged here. But saying a hire “doesn’t make sense” is stupid and doesn’t make sense. No head coach makes a hire they think is a bad fit for the program. Irrational Donovan bashing before he calls a single game will not be tolerated here. Take that shit to HH where it belongs.
There is no Moorhead “version of the Franklin offense” vs Donovan’s. When Franklin brought in Moorhead he gave him autonomy to run the show. There is very little in common between what Moorhead ran at Penn State vs what Donovan ran.
Rhett lashlee has Miami offense looking pretty good. We apparently passed on this guy for John don…….. hopefully the right move
