.Exciting day! We have pulled in a ridiculously good offensive class and a mediocre at best defensive class, despite landing one of the best recruits in UW history.
I am a little disappointed that this board is so dead. I really like the insight of the people on here and I wish there was a little more engagement.
So lets talk about this shit! Who are we most excited for? Who will make the most immediate impact? Who is going to be the biggest sleeper?
Yeah the defensive class is pretty weak. Smalls is a elite pick up, Covington is solid but the rest of the defensive class is underwhelming. Offensively besides Mason West, the class is really good though i’m not a fan of the two running backs. Who i’m most excited for is Smalls because it’s hard to find guys with his skill set and he plays one of the most important positions at buck. Immediate impact would be Jalen since theres a lot of playing time that will be available at WR and Jalen is the home run threat we have been missing. Sleeper would go to Carson Bruener who isn’t flashy but can get the job done and could be a solid starter for us.
I am so excited to see Smalls play, not only is he the best edge prospect UW has ever had, but he’s also a local guy. If he gets in the game against Michigan and makes play, the stadium is going to lose its shit. I also expect Jalen to be a consistent contributor by the end of the year, hopefully he is able to get on the field early.
This was a pretty weak effort at DB compared to years past. You could probably argue this is the second worst DB group since Jimmy has been here, but that says more about the high quality of the other classes.
I would be a lot lower on Bruener if it wasn’t for who his dad is. He has the genes to get a lot bigger.
I know that malloe brought in a huge class last year but did we recruit anyone on dl this year? That makes one great year in recruiting for malloe and a bunch of nothing every year besides that. Should Malloe be on the hot seat again? idk what the justification for not taking anyone is.

Smalls is still a project, I really doubt he’s on the field vs. Michigan. Great athlete but he is not even a dominant player in HS. I think he has a ton to learn about the game before he sees the field. He’s still coasting off of buzz from when he was 15. Hopefully the competition he encounters at UW spurs him greater growth.

It was a extremely weak year for DL on the west coast so it was slim pickings. He tried to recruit the few DL that were actually good but got beat out by Utah and Baylor. That is what happens when you go 7-5.

Neither of the RBs are 1,000 yard guys in college. Sunday will probably have a McGrew or Newton kind of career. Having said that I like what he brings to the RB room which is the ability to break tackles and get into the hole. He’s a pure RB who can do damage in the Pac.
Adams is a bigger back who is a finesse guy, not sure I’m into that. Not to mention he has been kept away from contact on offense for most of the EC season.
Smalls is far from an elite player, but with his tools and athleticism he is still a guy you can put on the field for a few plays in pass rush situations. Hope they can work him in early.

This OL is just stupid good. literally 3 of the top 4 prospects on the west coast. Murao is probably the most impressive signing in the class relative to difficulty. Having elite lines is SO important. I think even Clemson, Ohio State and Alabama would be happy with this OL class.

Esteen is the second best defensive player in the class and is the best of the DBs, and it isn’t even a little close.
But, overall, this is a poor defensive class. My only solace is that the defensive classes had been so much better over the previous three classes that it shouldn’t hurt too badly. Especially given that the 2021 class should be elite on both sides of the ball.

So while this class isn’t exactly amazing on defense, it follows a class that was top 5 in the country on the defensive side of the ball and #2 by the way I calculated it last year. I have a feeling when I get around to doing it for the offense this year, we will see a very similar look.
These things go back and forth with needs and available talent out there. While we should aim to sign a top 10 class on the offense and defense side of the ball every year, having an ehhh defense class is acceptable if it is coupled with an ELITE offensive class and follows an ELITE defensive class. Need to close on 1-2 high end defense players and this could end up being a fairly balanced class (minus DL because even if we somehow end up with with Xavier, which is not looking like amazing odds, we still don’t have enough)

Very excited about this class. Particularly the offense of line. I read with some surprise what Brandon Huffman said online about Garbers, specifically that he will be the best passer in the quarterback room at U dub the day he arrives.
Curious who people think will make the earliest impact? I think one of the WRs or Smalls.
Think Rome could get playing time early, seems like he wont need to gain as much weight as mcmillan will. Maybe Im an idiot, definitely an idiot actually, but I like Sunday too. I want a running back that can run some fuckers over like Dick Newton.

Agree, with the talent we have on offense there should be no reason to struggle next year even with a new OL and new starting QB. Just need to find a OC that can bring in a system that can take advantage of the talent we have accumulated.
Speaks to our culture and how spoiled we are to a degree. In the Pete era we had no drama. Not one commit went elsewhere despite him walking away even.
Offensive class was probably best offensive class in program history. Hard to complain.
Defense? A lot left to be desired despite best or at worst 2nd best defensive recruit(Shaq?) in program history.
Big picture: Class of 2019 produced best defensive recruiting class in program history. 2020 produced best offensive recruiting class in program history. 2021 has three in state guys that we are favored to land including one already committed ranked in the top 10 in the entire nation!
Basically what I’m saying is the future is bright and Lake is the guy to take us to the next level!
Think with Rome and Jalen we have to remember Lake’s openness to play young talent vs Pete. Like under Pete I would pedict Rome RS and Jalen is so good he gets Puka treatment which is still terribly underused. Don’t be surprised if both aren’t out there vs Michigan.
WR room should be stronger with a second year Puka, 4th year Ty Jones, 4th year Bynum who came on down the stretch, still have Spiker and hopefully Osborne.
