Remember back in 1990 the expectations for UW Football weren’t high. We were ranked 20th to start the season against San Jose St only to eek out a 3 point victory which actually caused us to drop to #22 for the Purdue game which we won by 6 points. The prevailing notion was that 5th Ranked USC with Robo QB Marinovich was going to tear us a new one.
We all know what happened there.
This Arizona game felt a lot like that. Disgruntled fans after the Ground Chuck OSU win were struggling to see excellence. I personally felt like with AZ we were either going to get into a shootout with them or being it’s their first road game we could smash them early and set the tone.
Boy did we set the tone. I haven’t seen an opposing QB with a look on their face like Gunnell in years. We all know the talent we have, perhaps more talent than the UW has had in years. So it’s not that much of a surprise but it still takes time for that talent to mature.
Have you noticed Oregon fans aren’t as chippy as they usually are? They’re happy to get the wins but they see the holes and other inconsistencies that we see. They’ve had an entire offseason of ESPN and Fox Sports falling over themselves to tell the world how dominant Oregon was going to be this season juxtaposed today with actual field results. Oregon is a good team but I’ve got a bridge to sell you if they watched the demolition of Arizona and thought “yeah I can’t wait to get some of that action”
Ditto for USC. Arizona gave them everything they can handle. If for some reason WSU can’t play and we schedule Utah and say Utah gets blown out. Barring disaster the UW would favored in every game save for the Oregon game which would be a pick’em.
Other teams will downplay but it’s crucial that we play again this weekend and continue to show dominance. If we show dominance again the entire Pac-12 tilts north to UW.
