Under Petersen, our recruiting classes got better and better each year.
The 2019 class was outstanding and NC-caliber. The 2020 class was just about as good and #1 on December signing day. Pete left and we whiffed in January.
That whiff in January basically continued through the duration of 2021.
Roughly a year ago we were looking at potential for an outstanding class this cycle. Even better than 2019. We whiffed on all of our top targets.
Coaches like Junior Adams, Ikaika Malloe who had been good recruiters in the past whiffed. Even Scott Huff whiffed, though he had an A+ the year before.
The perception of UW is we are back to being a mid-level Power 5 program. Not a top 25 program but a mid-level Power 5 program.
Petersen elevated our brand and gave us huge credibility. Even last December, after a disastrous 7-5 season, top recruits seriously considered UW bc of Pete and his track record.
All of that vanished within a few weeks.
We need big seasons in 21 & 22 to elevate the brand. We need strong recruiters too, obviously. But the larger problem is at the top. We’re not getting a brand boost anytime soon.
