Participant01/15/2021 at 8:34 am #22331Listening to this reminds me of how fired up I was during the brief period of Arizona-Utah. Even Oregon State, I didn’t have any concerns, just thought this was a better beaver team (2-4 is pretty disappointing, they should have been at least 3-3). Our players appeared to really be into the program and relieved that the Pete cloud hanging over everything was gone.
During the SC/UCLA game, as fans of other North teams were postulating that it was going to be Colorado/Oregon vs. SC and then all the sudden during the game, the conference officially tweets out that CCG graphic with Morris v Slovis, I just about spit out my beer laughing like an idiot. Has there been a better following Monday-Tuesday for just shear rival trolling?
Really shameful Jenn called it off.
And Stanford. My god. Duck fans keep bringing up their record against us, but when I think of the 3 most painful losses of the last 5+ years, none come close to our last 3 losses against goddamn tree. 2017 obviously the worst.

Participant01/15/2021 at 10:31 pm #22342I only re-watch the Arizona game and the second halves of the Utah and Stanford games. Easy to be optimistic about this team next year if that’s what you do.

The only reason why we overlooked Stanford was because they looked horrible without Mills, Wilson and Weddington to start the season. Their Defense looked pretty bad as well but the Cal game wasn’t a fluke they played their best game of the season.
NOW.
If you looked at the previous Stanford vs Cal game and then someone told you UW would be without Bowman, Puka, Bynum. I’m not sure anyone would tell you that’s a sure fire win.
There were a lot of purple tinted glasses viewing the Stanford. Kudos to Stanford for realizing that ZTF and Small inexperience at the edge would be exploited and for Mills making the right read and throw on 3rd Down.
I’m proud of how the boys played in the 2nd half. I think many of were looking forward to the Oregon game because we wanted to see how the coaches adjusted first half defense so we didn’t fall behind so quickly and honestly the offense responded to more uptempo play calling. I think they were getting ready to let the offense just get after it for a full game.

Participant01/17/2021 at 10:33 pm #22354I agree with many points in the podcast. Especially the personal branding thing. Kids want constant attention and adoration on social media which they can get by being national figures in hotbed CFB locations.
Add to that NIL. Kids won’t even have to remain solely focused on the NFL if they can make some decent money doing car ads in Georgia or Ohio. Need to figure out how to make UW football successful in the new media/branding environment. Cohen and Lake…not sure these two have the firepower to navigate and recruit in this world.

These points aside, branding and all that other big picture stuff doesn’t prevent you from simply beating Stanford at home.
There are still so many things that the present UW players and coaches can control RIGHT NOW to make this an upper-tier program. The problem for this program is disappearing for an entire half against teams and playing down to inferior opponents.
The schedule is pretty soft next year, with great preparation and coaching they should be able to notch 11 wins. GET IT DONE or this program is fucked.
