“We’re a sleeping giant”
They’re always saying USC and Texas are sleeping giants which is why those guys switch coaches every 3 years to find “the one”.
The reality is resources only matter so much. It’s very hard to find a dedicated coach that is very aggressive, passionate and builds a program the correct way to have success in the meta.
Oregon is probably the school with the least amount of talent in-conference within a 100-mile radius of campus, yet they hired someone who has a winning formula for college football. Say what you want about the Covid year but he’s definitely had some impressive success early on in his tenure.
I just don’t think Lake fits that bill right now for me. I’m gonna get this out now and I know I might be very wrong but If I’ve learned anything it’s better most of the time to say how you really feel than just keep quiet.
Again, I’m nowhere near ready to give up on Lake but I’ve been witnessing a few red flags early on specifically with hiring.
For starters, most elite CFB schools like to look outside for a new coach than hire internally. It is said that schools do this because constantly bringing outside ideas is more conducive to long-term success in this sport. When teams hire internally it’s usually because that person is a really REALLY fucking good recruiter and developer.
So my question is, why Bob Gregory? Why a guy who hasn’t been a DC since fucking Tedford and Cal was a relevant thing?
ESPECIALLY when he doesn’t bring good recruiting or player development. Why settle? Just why? Why are you hanging on to your guys? IT’S LITERALLY A LOSING FORMULA Just a terrible hire on paper.
“Well, we need to show it on the field for recruits to like this hire man it’s ok that recruits don’t like it, we’ll show it on the field”
Except, shouldn’t that go into the whole hiring process? The recruiting optics? because recruiting isn’t just a during the fall thing, it’s a year-round thing and it is EXTREMELY important. It’s the most important thing in CFB. Talent.
So why are you content with having your shit pushed all offseason and losing recruits to Oregon like Tory Franklin and Emeka to OSU.
THOSE ARE LITERALLY GAME-CHANGING TALENTS. YOU FUCKING NEED THEM.
Then you turn around and make the same mistake with the boring retread, uninspiring hire now for the defensive side of the ball.
And guess what? don’t be surprised if we get our ass kicked on the trail for defensive prospects this summer and it hurts us for the next 4 years.
I just don’t understand, nobody is making hires like this man. Does lake not have connections or does he not know what he’s doing? It’s not a winning formula and it’s been proven time and time again.
Recruiting starts from the top with the head coach. If the head coach values his friends over recruiting, or he doesn’t put recruiting optics high on the list when hiring guys, that’s his fault for losing big time prospects.
It’s a slippery slope with this shit. We’ve all witnessed these types of flame-outs before. Our literal rival had a coach do stuff very similar to what our coach is currently doing and it gave us a window in the conference for the first time in a long time.
I hope Lake isn’t the next Helfrich but I’d be lying if there weren’t similarities there man.
I’ll just leave it at that but pretty much a make or break recruiting offseason for Lake.
