Jimmy Lake’s recruiting problems

I watched a thing online on Bill Belichick assistants and why they fail. The common theme was they try to be just like Bill but they don’t have his resume.

This applies to Lake. He dismisses stars openly, has all that same Boise shit but he doesn’t have 2 Fiesta Bowl titles or an 80% winning percentage that Pete has. So right now he’s just an idiot openly making excuses for why he can’t recruit until proven otherwise. Despite what Pete says bout stars he cares. You don’t fly a jet on signing day down to Arizona to make sure Murphy turns in letter of intent. Do you honestly think Lake does that? I don’t.

The Sav’ell Smalls situation most coaches would have messed that up. It got ugly at one point. It was nice having a veteran like Pete. Also telling that Pete and Kwit handled his recruiting after he told us off and not Lake.

Also from what I’ve read Lake doesn’t know what our program is. With Pete you knew what you were getting in recruiting, in his coaching, how he runs a program. It’s like politics , majority of people don’t like their senators or congress but they constantly re-elect these guys cause known commotity is better than the unknown.

Lake so far in recruiting has been Gilby bad. I’d say Ty and Sark were better so far. His flying a sky jet around town to show off for JTT who is from Seattle screamed desperation to me. JTT wasn’t shown in any pics either which was a bad sign.

That’s what Oregon and Ohio State does. With Pete he preached and believed in built for life. I read a thing last year when we had a bunch of recruits one high school coach said we are trying to be Oregon lite now. Pete made us unique in recruiting and had the resume to back it up.

Lake looks like a guy randomly throwing darts, has no strategy at all and thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room at all times. Parents like guys like Pete who are genuine, not smug cocky a-holes like Lake.

Lake inability to connect with parents and sell is killing us. Watching his pressers he comes off as an arrogant prick. Like if he wasn’t our head coach I’d hate him.

Pete came off as very genuine and even if he coached at Oregon I’d still respect him . With Pete the program was about the players and those behind the program. With Lake, this program appears to be only about him.

What’s alarming is the widening gap between Oregon and Washington. Last year Oregon had 19 4/5 stars while Washington had 4. This year Oregon has 8 while Washington has 2. Washington’s coaching isn’t good enough to overcome that talent gap.

I’m not getting at all how we’re trying to be “Oregon Lite”. The only time I’ve ever thought that, at all, was around 2013 during Sark’s desperate attempt at offense and jersey combos and all that.

I think the problem is that Pete put in a shart 2019 season, then the pandemic took us down to 4 games, we ended the season with a bad loss and then didn’t even get to take advantage of our division championship and a mediocre team got to instead, beating down a soft south team.

So we aren’t on anybody’s radar right now.

I don’t blame any of the assistant coaches for being shit recruiters. I blame Jimmy for keeping them employed.

Because just like Mario is living off that rose bowl year, recruits are looking at our last full year, a horrible 8 win season where we were linked at home by Cal, Oregon, and Utah.

That, is 100% on Pete and his offense.

CNAM (could not agree more). Outside of Huff/Malloe/and 1/2 credit for Adams, when any of the other coaches leave the living room, the recruit does not see or is excited about playing for that coach, and all the parents here are the same clichés and coach speak the other programs are saying.

This has nothing to do with Pete. When Sark flipped the staff after the Alamo Bowl, he brought in better recruiters and they pulled better talent. It wasn’t because of Steve’s great record.

I’m going to agree with the sentiment that Jimmy thinks he can out develop better recruiting programs. Arrogant. There’s no reason you can’t have both. Be developers but start from a higher base with better athletes.

It’s really Will Harris that can’t reel in his targets. Coach Harris has to figure out where he’s not appealing to the kids.

In the short term we’re going to be ok because there are some talented kids that the UW has managed to get

Oregon doesn’t impress me other than OL and I’d expect them to recruit OL well given Mario’s experience at the position. Other than that I’m firmly in LIPO mode because I think Oregon chases stars.

Before someone tries the “Purple Tinted glasses” BS just go watch the Fiesta Bowl and how a bunch of 3 stars kicked Oregon’s ass up and down the field.

I think they’re soft and only won with Hellfrich kids that were tired of losing. They started the season thinking they were a CFP caliber team and ended with announcers making excuses about them being the youngest team in FBS(which wasn’t true )

They think they’re going to win just by showing up which is why they lost against OSU and Cal and should have lost against UCLA. Iowa State was just a better team and they basically didn’t have any chance trying a dual QB system.

He’s been lazy ever since.

we have enough talent from the 18-20 classes to do really well in the ‘21 and ‘22 seasons, especially this year with the favorable schedule. But man we are going to be in for a big drop after that when we are relying on the 21 and 22 classes to carry the load.

The last two classes feel like watching a slow march towards the inevitable outcome of becoming just another jag team in a jag conference in a couple of years.

It appears as if we have went from needing everything to go right to compete in a NY6 bowl, to needing the same to just win the North beginning in 2023 and that is pathetic.

I listened to the Cooper Petagna – impressive guy – if Jimmy fired him and it appears he did — Why? This appears to be another concrete example of Jimmy not prioritizing recruiting.

So he wants to be a head coach in the NFL and he is acting as he is right now by deemphasizing recruiting and focussing on development and identifying hidden gems.

He seems prepared to sacrifice Husky Football so he can look like a genius in development and an eye for talent. The arrogance and selfishness are only exceeded by the stupidity of this approach.

The irony is this won’t get him to the NFL if he has a lousy record, however, I for one can wait for him to leave for the NFL asap.
