I’m not a fan of Jen Cohen but to single her out for football mediocrity is probably off base. It’s more the entire UW sports complex. Do we have die hard, blue blood fans? Nope. Our fans would rather tailgate and not even be in their seats 20-30 minutes before the game to help set the atmosphere. Do we have a die hard upper campus? Nope. Our president and her staff are more interested in winning sustainability awards than winning football games. Do we have a die hard athletic department? Nope. Not if you look at the gameday experience and elements of the department that are staffed by fans of other college teams. When you look at your athletic program and the crown jewels are softball and crew it’s a much larger systemic problem than just one person. Jen Cohen is mediocre and not about being all in but she is just symbolic of the whole Husky experience.

These are good points but we need to have an AD who can change all that and lead a department with the expectation of excellence.
Ain’t gonna happen. An expectation of football excellence comes from higher up in the ladder than the AD. See Oregon.

Oregon hired Willie Taggert and then promoted Mario Christobal after Taggert left after one season.
Both schools want to be good at football and makes the university a lot of money at it.
You have zero proof to the contrary other than the usual hardcore husky diatribe.

The higher up for Oregon is Phil Knight and what he has put into the program financially.
Exactly right godawg and since we don’t have a Phil Knight the demand for excellence has to come from upper campus
and I don’t think that exists at UW.
I get that it helps if it comes from upper campus.
But if you hire the right person they can demand excellence and lift their department/group.
Pete was one of those hires until he quit.
What did Phil pay for that is crushing us?
Bigger jumbotron?
New track and field stadium?
How come Oregon’s UC that cares so much allowed them to promote an assistant after their 7 win hc left?
How come Phil didn’t just back up a truck into Saban/Dabo’s houses?
Think UW upper campus is like, “This new Adidas contract is just okay. It’s fine. All this national branding we got for making the CFP while still being a world class university: we don’t really need this.”?
They made 20 years of bad hires. Criticize them for that.
This narrative is so loser doog in nature it’s barely worth responding to anymore.

You’d think with all of that Phil Knight money they’d be able to build a football stadium that doesn’t look like it belongs in the Mountain West conference. Since when does Oregon “demand excellence”? Their athletic director was perfectly satisfied with Mark Helfrich’s mediocre recruiting that tanked their program from the greatest success they’ve ever had under Chip Kelly to a dumpster fire in a few short years. Then they hired a small time coach from USF and when that guy dumped them they hired their O-line coach because the players wanted him. None of that is “demanding excellence”. Oregon is not back. They had one peak season in four years and will drop back down 8-4 and 9-3 seasons for the next few years until they have another super veteran team. Oregon is not the measuring stick for UW. We are trying to be far better than them and win a national championship, something the University of Oregon has never done in the sport of football.
As I said on our last pod or the one before it, I think Oregon pushes harder than we do. They push like an SEC school. We are a level below that.
An example is they got rid of Helfrich immediately after one bad year. Another example is they wouldn’t hold onto Boner and Gregory this long.
We did get the new stadium and got the extra money to invest in the new assistants in 2011-2012 which was a huge deal.
The narrative that upper campus doesn’t care isn’t true. They just dont care to the level most of us want.
I’m cooking up something to try and get old players and Tyees to re-engage with the program so more pressure will be placed on the AD, etc.
I always get a kick out of doogs who misuse the word “doog” and end up insulting themselves. Comical.

Also might seem like a minor thing but they reached out and tried to hire that Hayes Fawcett kid who makes all the recruit edits for twitter. He was being “recruited” by teams to be their graphic designers. He mentioned in an interview who reached out. Usual suspects: bama, Clemson, Georgia…and Oregon. That is aggressive. He ended up “committing” to LSU but I don’t think is going because of $. Anyway I wish our AD cared that much.

Ok doog.
The only two things different from 30 years ago at the have not table of schools in the Pac 12 is there are two new members (Utah/Colorado) AND one school doesn’t sit there anymore. One guess who that is.
If Phil Knight doesn’t enjoy himself at the Ducks Rose Bowl in 1995 and start writing big checks how much success do they have on their own? (Just give the damn ball to Nip Jeff Woodruff 4 times from the one. Jeezus)
Beliotti and Ernie Kent are jag’s without Phil’s money and the bells/whistles/shiny toys it can buy which make impressions on 17 y/o recruits, and Chipper had a ingenious offensive scheme no one had saw in the read zone.
Without Phil’s money there is NO chance Dana Altman comes over from Creighton. He may be a horrible human, but he is a terrific b-ball coach.
Doogs, Dawgs, whoever, whether we want to admit it or not, over the last 25 years the team in Eugene has lapped us multiple times over in on field success for the revenue sports. Their fans look at us like we did at them until the mid 90’s and without Phil Knight (and Nike’s influence) there is ZERO.ZERO Zero chance that happens.

And none of that mattered until Chip.
The money helps them not be Oregon State, but that one coach is what changed their program. And that hire came out of nowhere just like Washington and James.
