Participant02/09/2021 at 11:31 am #23247LOL what an underwhelming pick up.
dude had 11 tackles in 3 years at a&m.
Highschool film shows he’s a skinny guy with little power, raw, some decent functional athleticism, decent length and that’s it.
If your skinny you gotta show better explosiveness than whatever he showed in Highschool.
Add dude probably added weight and his strength which is his ok athleticism isn’t as good
doubt he makes a big impact here.

Participant02/09/2021 at 11:58 am #23251Here is what Eklund posted per a Aggie insider:
from someone I know who is very close to the A&M program.
I asked him for some reasons why JM didn’t have the success a lot of us thought he would at the collegiate level.
“When Martin was offered by A&M, the Aggies were using a four man front under former defensive coordinator John Chavis in which the defensive ends got upfield. However, by the time that Martin signed with the Aggies, new defensive coordinator Mike Elko had arrived in College Station and his defense featured three big down linemen and an edge player who not only was tasked with rushing the passer but also dropping into coverage. The ends in the defense also tasked with being more disciplined in terms of playing the edge due to the RPOs that so many teams were using, staying in their lanes, and not losing containment. Players at the position generated fewer sacks although the defense as a whole improved, particularly versus the run.
“Martin was the backup at the edge spot as a freshman. Even so, he never really seemed comfortable in the scheme and displayed difficulty in escaping blocks or finding the ball in 11 on 11 situations. As a result, his playing time gradually decreased over the years even though his weight went from 240 to 262 pounds. He might be more of a fit where heās asked to do what he was originally projected to do when A&M offered him all of those years ago, coming off of the line of scrimmage and trying to make something happen in the backfield and being less of a read and react player.”
My guess is he is a tweener and will struggle to see the field until he puts on weight and plays as a down lineman/hybrid roll like Benning did. I hope Martin can set an edge as well as he did

Participant02/09/2021 at 12:12 pm #23252Played 32 career games and only credited with 11 tackles, no other production besides that. Even for a career backup to this point, those stats are underwhelming. Could be a decent pickup for depth but if we are relying on solid production, this isnāt the move. He hasnāt shown anything to prove to be a producer, based off the film Iāve watched.

Participant02/09/2021 at 1:48 pm #23254So we got two 4-star transfers and people who were previously bitching about UW not doing anything in the transfer portal are now bitching about UW not getting the guys they wanted out of the portal. Y’all just keep moving the goal posts no matter what.
This kid was a TOP target for UW out of high school for a reason. He’s talented and he’s far from the only elite 4-star high school recruit to go to Texas A&M and do jack shit. Texas A&M is one of the worst schools in the country when it comes to wasting talent. If Jimmy Lake and company think they can get more out of him, chances are they can. They helped Joe Tryon and ZTF go from a lowly 3-stars with a modest offer sheets to beasts in college.

They complain about 3 Star kids because they feel every kid should be a 4 star
You get a 4 star transfer and they bitch about the product. Newsflash genius
If he was a starter he wouldnāt be transferring. They bitch about PWO
They bitch ..bitch ..bitch. It never stops.

He’s got functional athleticm.
Decent length seems to be no power
He’s Jaelan Phillips with no elite traits
tweener tweener tweener that will get eaten alive in the run game.

and He’s also not naturally strong and powerful to anchor.
tweening fuck.
He’s not Thibodeaux or Clelin Ferell. He’s a mixture of both without some of the athletic prowess.

This is a kid that looked great coming out of H.S we all wanted. We would have been ecstatic if he was a Dawg. He has a ton of upside and it’s a low / high upside pick up. Perhaps he drops a little weight and gets some of his explosiveness back, Malloe coaches him up well, and we provide a better system fit for him. Just because he hasn’t showed out yet doesn’t mean he can’t with us.
Not sure why you’re so down on this kid. It’s super low risk and it provides high upside and nice depth at a minimum.

Keymaster02/09/2021 at 3:21 pm #23261He’s a good pickup.
The negative is he probably doesn’t help us this year.
Getting Woodbey and/or Tootoo would have been transformative.

Without question. I like the Martin pickup for upside/depth at edge. Tootoo was the one we needed and if he goes to Oregon, itāll be a massive add for them. Transformative indeed.

Jimmy said he thinks ILB is one of the top two deepest position groups on the team along with the O-line. I call bullshit but if that’s his perspective, it explains why they might not be going after Tootoo. Strong safety is the bigger issue. I don’t know what the fuck is going on there. Can we just go back to having a strong safety who’s not afraid to tackle as a bare minimum?

It’s funny, Oregon is always named as a possible transfer destination for a lot of portal guys but so far, they’re not getting anybody. Siaki Ika would rather go to Baylor than Oregon.

It’s hard to win recruiting battles against those schools when they surrender a lot of those battles before the battles even begin. They pick and choose their battles against UW because they don’t want to give UW positive publicity by taking an L. Peihopa was the top DT prospect out West. Spears one of the top-5 DB prospects. Tunuufi one of the top-3 DT prospects. Prentice the top interior O-line prospect. USC and Oregon know those guys were some of the best recruits available and would have loved to have those guys but they never had a chance so there was never going to be a head-to-head battle between UW and one of those schools. You’re acting like USC and Oregon just mopped the floor with UW last class. They didnt. Oregon won three legit battles for Franklin, Matavao, and Suamataia after years of UW kicking their asses head-to-head and USC won a couple for Jaylin Smith and Mason Murphy. UW didnt want anybody else that those schools got.
