I don’t think PK has ever expressed interest in being a HC, not in his personality. I think they’re looking to have a seamless transition a la Oklahoma and Ohio State. Neither of those schools conducted coaching searches and neither coach had any HC experience.
The D was very good statistically in 2018, Jimmy’s first year calling plays. Personally I think Coach K is a better play caller and overall DC, but Jimmy probably would have improved over time. Last year’s struggles had more to do with the gaps in the roster than scheme or talent.
Jimmy has a personality that is way more suited for today’s game, I’ve also never gotten the impression that Coach K had the goal of being a HC. He would have left a long time ago.
If coach k wanted the job he wouldn’t have stepped down for jimmy before 2018. We lose jimmy if he doesn’t get the job coach k will stay. We get the best of both worlds by choosing jimmy.
1. The defense taking a step back everything to do with personnel on the field than Jimmy Lake’s play calling. Our ILB’s were so bad it was like we were playing with no ILB’s on the field at time. Manu and Wellington finished entire games with one or two tackles a couple times. That’s not Jimmy’s fault.
2. There is more that goes into being a head coach than just being a successful position coach or coordinator. It requires a level of energy and charisma that Coach K doesn’t have. He’s not a front-and-center type of personality.
3. Why wasn’t there a coaching search? Because the #1 target for the job was already here. If Jimmy wasn’t our head coach right now, he’d be the head coach at USC.

Yup, I hope John Timu is being groomed to replace him.
Can’t imagine he could possibly be a worse recruiter. And with what we had player development wise the last couple years we really can’t be worse off there either.
I think Timu would have instant credibility with recruits being a former NFL player and being from Long Beach. He also got in trouble while at UW and can share his story with recruits about how the program helped him grow up and become a man.
