Are we really blocking Garbers’ immediate eligibility at UCLA? Doesn’t that just feel like a petty move from a beta program? Here’s a thought: instead of wasting the time – no matter how inconsequential – to file the appeal, how about spending that time to, I don’t know, make your program better?

Participant03/13/2021 at 6:59 am #23842Yeah it’s pathetic. Garbers is probably 3rd at best on their depth chart. Why block that? I feel like pretty much every move Jimmy makes is the wrong one. Blocking a kid’s opportunity? Very OKG of Jimmy.

Participant03/13/2021 at 8:30 am #23844Lake is so tone deaf to the changing college landscape. Totally willing to take on new transfers with immediate eligibility but so quick to deny kids who committed to his program. I don’t give a shit if it’s an inter -conference move, this is just cowardly. With the pandemic and the simple nature of the portal, this is such a hypocritical attitude.

and transferred in to UW and had to sit a year.Just because a bunch of Ducks pretending to be Dawg fans here are upset doesn’t mean what you say
has any merit. -

Participant03/13/2021 at 8:08 pm #23847I fucking love it. That’s exactly what I would do. You wanna transfer to a non-conference school and be immediately eligible? Sure, that’s fine. But fuck you if you wanna transfer to another Pac-12 school and think you’re gonna play against us next season. Fuck these kids. They’re ruining college football. Somebody has to stand up and show them who’s boss. I love Jimmy having the balls to lead the charge for all coaches who are sick of this nonsense. It’s gotten out of hand. That’s an alpha move right there.

Participant03/14/2021 at 8:22 am #23848It doesn’t have to be a one size fits all decision. Just because it’s another PAC 12 team doesn’t automatically mean impose a block. Jimmy can weigh whether the kid is likely to be a factor in the next season. It’s most likely that Garbers will not get significant playing time so why block? It just makes you look like a dick to prospective recruits. If it was someone like Eddie who would walk into a starting position well yeah then go ahead and say he has to sit out but this decision by Jimmy seems to lack foresight.

I don’t give a fuck. Recruits barely pay attention to anything. Most have no idea Oregon backed their way into the Pac-12 title game. They definitely won’t have any idea about that shit. How about creating a little bit of a deterrent for other players still on the roster from transferring to other Pac-12 schools?

Participant03/17/2021 at 9:42 pm #23891And you failed to mention Petersen did the same exact thing to Yankoff. Did you feel the same way then as you do now? Or did you not even know Petersen did it as well.
Fuck UCLA. We’re not just gonna let them poach our bottom-of-the-depth chart QB’s with zero consequences like some doormat program that just let’s our competitors walk all over us.

Participant03/20/2021 at 10:46 pm #23922In the era we are in of immediate open transfers without having to sit out, to think other programs aren’t going to bring it up that we are competing with in the Pac-12 (Utah/Cal/UCLA) to negative recruit us with is just sticking your head in the sand.
Yankoff was no threat to us on the field and in fact we should have hoped he was the starter down there, and I suspect the same for Garbers.
Let it go Jimmy. It’s doing you more harm than good.

Participant03/25/2021 at 12:27 pm #23992LMAO Lincoln Riley is doing the exact same thing to one of his former QB’s who is transferring to TCU. Is it okay now that Lincoln Riley is doing it or is it still a “petty move by a beta program”? Like I said, the transfer shit has gotten out of hand, especially at the QB position, and these coaches need to grow a pair and provide some push back for the betterment of college football. Looks to me like Jimmy is a leader and an alpha and other big-time coaches are following his lead.
ESPN article:
Lincoln Riley confirmed Wednesday that Oklahoma has not released quarterback Chandler Morris, who has transferred to TCU, saying he and OU are opposed to transfers within the conference becoming eligible immediately.
TCU coach Gary Patterson told local reporters Monday that Morris was competing with returning starter Max Duggan, but that “he still hasn’t been released by Oklahoma.”
Said Riley during a Zoom meeting with reporters: “This particular situation, for us, is about something that we believe in — myself, the leadership here at OU — we think it’s unhealthy for college football to encourage intraconference transfers. That’s something that we’ve been adamantly opposed to for a long time. I get the landscape is changing. We’re certainly watching that and we’re willing to adapt as the world changes, but this has nothing to do with that or with the person. Chandler Morris did a tremendous job here; he’s a terrific young man.”
Riley mentioned that another player transferred to a Pac-12 school (Brendan Radley-Hiles to Washington) and he was released. He said he believes overall the changes in players’ ability to transfer has been good for players and for college football.
“I think it was a good rule to change, and now players could have the ability and freedom as they should to be able to go to any school they want. But I do think the interconference [transfers] can complicate things. I think that coaches understand the big picture and understand that’s going to bring along a lot of negatives that I just don’t know that we want in this game.”
Riley landed several transfers this offseason, including offensive tackle Wanya Morris and running back Eric Gray from Tennessee, quarterback Micah Bowen from Penn State and another offensive lineman, Robert Congel from Arizona.
A year before Riley arrived as offensive coordinator under Bob Stoops, Baker Mayfield transferred to OU from another Big 12 school, Texas Tech, after beginning his career as a walk-on and spent a year waiting to become eligible.
Riley and Patterson both said the discussion around Morris is ongoing.
“It’s a fluid situation right now,” Riley said. “Our plan is just to let this play, let some of these rules solidify and we’ll be open to watching it and seeing how it unfolds.”
While the transfer came as a surprise initially, Riley insisted the holdup wasn’t a result of any issue with Morris.
“I hated to see him go. You never want players to leave your program, but I know he’s going to a good program there with Coach Patterson and I wish the kid all the best.”
Morris attended Dallas’ Highland Park High School. He is the son of former SMU and Arkansas head coach Chad Morris, who spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Auburn.

There’s nothing petty about it. It’s not personal. As Lincoln Riley said, it has nothing to do with the kid personally. It’s about doing what’s best for college football.
