I have no idea what kind of expectations to even have with Lake hiring a DC after the whole Donovan ordeal, but I’m assuming he is going to the NFL to find his guy. Here are a few I hope he looks at;
Has worked with some elite DBs when he was in Seattle and when he was in Dallas he was doing play calling for the defense, at least for a while, and since he wasn’t with a team last year we know he would be available.
He’s been a DC at the collegiate and pro level before, but is now running the elite Steelers secondary. Only 55 I’m sure he is looking to get his shot back to a higher profile job and a couple of good years here could do that.
Also had a year as DC his main role in the NFL has been the D line and helped turn Kawann Short into a pro bowler and had multiple guys at 10 sack years. He is currently on the Bills staff.
TBH it is weird to me still that he isn’t playing. He was so dang talented as a player. Currently the ILB coach with the Patriots he has so much playing experience in the NFL as well as learning from Belichick for so long I bet he could be very successful. Plus you know, get rid of Gregory as well…
As a little more fun I think that BG will go to Texas and we will need a new LB coach. Gregory had a large salary, but I have a feeling a good chunk of that will help lure a higher salary earning DC than a top LB coach so I wanted to explore a few younger rising stars.
Siriki Diabate Middle Tenn LB coach-
I don’t know anything about his recruiting ability being at such a tiny school (which can be said probably about most on this list), but the development so far by him is impressive. Since 2017 he had coached 3 LBs into all conference players.
Sean Duggan Boston College LB coach-
A former BC player that might be tough to lure away for that reason, but he also coached two all conference LBs when he was the position coach at Hawaii only 2 years after he was done playing himself.
Deonte Gibson Akron OLB Coach-
If Gregory stays and we just need an OLB coach Gibson would be great. He has worked on top 30 defenses before and has been praised by Pat Fitzgerald as a great teacher and relentless recruiter.
Chidera Uzo-Diribe Kansas OLB coach
A Long Beach native and former Colorado Buff, he impressed Les Miles enough to earn a spot as a position coach at 28. A dynamic recruiter who signed some of their best recruits he has contacts in So Cal, Texas and Georgia. Considering it is probably the hardest D1 CFB school to recruit to I bet he would flourish in a place like UW.
I know it’s going to be nearly impossible to predict and we will probably get some guy who is the personal seat warmer for the co-lb coach of the now extinct Houston Oilers, but I would love to hear guesses on other semi-plausible NFL guys.
