So, my ideal class make up is unique to our situation at UW. I don’t want all five stars. Five stars are great, but all of anything makes you too eccentric…
My ideal class make up:
5-7 top 100 guys
10 top 300 guys (15-17 4+ stars)
3-5 Kevin King type kids (3-stars with rare physical characteristics)
3-5 Cade Ottons (underrated local kids who have rare physical characteristics and something to prove)
I want 7-10 IN-STATE KIDS every year.
Washington is very provincial. Playing for the W means a lot to kids from UW. And that drives their pride. We need kids like Savvy who know what it means and are physically talented and so people want to be like them. And we need kids like John Fiala who will be pissed if anyone is disrespecting this thing they hold in such high regard.
5-7 Cali kids
Depending on who we can get, we need LA kids and Bay Yay kids who enjoy dominating the schools back home and come to the UW to show those clowns what is up up here.
3-5 Hawaii kids
Poly pipeline. Self explanatory.
Get guys like Puka, Elijah and Byron Murphy.
1-2 St. Elsewhere.
That WASHINGTON heavy, TALENT heavy mix will keep us strong. We don’t need to be a team that gets a bunch of guys who just come here because it’s the hot school. That usually creates erosion. You need guys who see our style of play, know what it means to play at UW and take pride in NOT being Oregon or USC.
Five stars are great, but Cade Otton, Sidney Jones, Kevin King, Kaleb McGary and Dante Pettis are too.
You need that mix of guys who are physically SOOOOO dominant, with guys that are hungry, guys that know what UW means and you need a mix of every cultural identity we have.
That leads to a roster with about 60% blue chips and that is just fine.
