You guys are ridiculous. First of all, did maybe the fact they were playing for the national championship have anything to do with their energy level and how fast both teams played? They don’t play like that every single week. Nobody can. For instance, Clemson almost lost to North Carolina earlier in the season and only won that game 21-20. I’m sure our team would look faster playing for a national title game too.
How do we not have size and speed? There are different ways to win games. LSU, like UW, plays a bunch of big 300+ pound two-gapping NT body types on the interior of their D-line. Remember Siaki Ika and Rashaad Lawrence? Those guys are big but they’re not all that fast. Sama Paama is more talented than both of them. Ika was just a fat blob out there clogging up the interior running lanes. On the other hand, Clemson plays mostly smaller, faster guys on their D-line that weigh in the 280-290 range in the same mold as Levi Onwuzurike. UW is recruiting both big 300 pound bodies and lighter, faster bodies on the D-line but given our defensive scheme, we will always lean more towards looking like LSU up front. And nobody can tell me UW doesn’t have size on the O-line. Our starting O-line next season will be just as big, if not bigger than the O-lines playing in the championship game last night. Kirkland, Bainivalu, and Curne are all 320+ pounds and can maul people.
You also had Clemson playing basically the entire game with SEVEN DB’s on the field. Could that be why their defense looked fast? Uh yeah, no shit. We’ve recruited fast DB’s too and fast ILB’s like Josh Calvert, Daniel Heimuli, Miki Ah You, Drew Fowler, and Carson Bruener. There is no speed difference between them and us. We just need to get our young talent on the field which will happen automatically next season because all the JAGs are gone.
Jesus Christ, this is the most chicken little fan base in the country. Some people are constantly worried about what Oregon is doing or worried UW will never be as “big” or as “fast” as these teams in the national title game. We already have guys like that. They need to play live college football games and develop to get to the level of those teams and they will.
I made the point that even in the playoff and the Rose Bowl we never came out with that much energy. We always look scared when we play those teams.
And dude, our defensive players are nowhere near the size and strength of their defense. I do think out DBs could play on any team in the country, and we have a couple DL that could too, but holy shit their linebackers are huge and can fly around. I hope our young guys live up to that. Bringing in a class of Cooper McDonald and Carson Breuner (who I like!) doesn’t bring me a lot of optimism.
