The issue is how small time this looks. Oregon is going after the absolute best available. And we hire a guy who fell down the coaching ladder.
We don’t know how it will play out. I don’t think he’s going to be terrible. But it’s such a small time hire.
Teams trying to win a NC don’t make this kind of a hire.
I think a head coach with a big dick hires whoever the fuck he wants and doesn’t care about the outside perception of the hire. There are hidden gem coordinators out there who get fucked over by a bad situation and scapegoated by a head coach and sometimes never get another opportunity like this even though they deserve it. Donovan could easily be one of those guys. Time will tell. But outside of Kellen Moore, there was no splash hire to make. All the rest of the realistic candidates were either locks to go somewhere else because of their personal relationships with other coaches (Mike Yurcich) or have some sort of blemish on their resume (Helfrich as a head coach after Mariota, Moorehead at Miss State, etc).
Helfrich was a coordinator in the NFL. This guy was an assistant to a position coach.
If we paid enough money we could get someone top notch. Word was we planned to do that.
The Tulane guy would have been good (assuming Oregon gets Moorehead).
This guy is not a hidden gem.
