Softy is bad for the program because he doesn’t have championship expectations.
Gave Ty a 5th year then went on a big rant about him needing to go midway through 2008.
Fluffed Sark the entire time he was here.
It sounds silly but Softy is somewhat a tone setter for the fanbase.
It’s not good to have cheerleaders be the only voices for your favorite program, but I think podcasts and unofficial sites and stations pick up the slack there.
I was also someone who kept listening to KJR during the komo debacle, because those guys are such big fans it just makes for better radio after games.
I do think they bring up fan criticisms and don’t outright censor callers. They let you say that last year was the most disappointing season in a really long time.
Softy will probably never be in a position where he can outright start trashing a coach and the program/school unless he gets caught at a Bellevue massage parlor and has to start doing solo podcasts.
Cam Cleeland and the pdx huskies would fluff the program just as much if they transitioned up to Seattle.
I’m in the PDX market, which comes with many obvious challenges. I have to say though that local radio here – in spite of all the Zeroes you see on shirts, cars, etc. – has no equivalent, and not even close, to the Honks as far as their love for the local program and their football insight (and I’m obviously referring to Hugh and Dick with the latter part). I’ve listened to the Yuck station(s) pre and post game – as painful as it is – and frankly its pedestrian and just plain boring. That’s something I haven’t experienced with the Honks.
