The Chargers have been fun to watch lately, especially with that Pac 12 connection from Herbert to Keenan Allen. The SEC honks among college football talking heads all had Burrow and Tua way ahead of Herbert coming out of college, and now they are having to eat their words. I think Tua was actually planning on going to Oregon at one point, wasn’t he? I wonder if seeing Herbert there changed his mind. It seems likely that he never would have been the starter at Oregon, which is a funny thought.
I’m not sure I buy the ‘Oregon never developed Herbert’ argument. I mean, he looks pretty developed to me, getting called into the Chiefs game on no notice and throwing for 300 yards and almost beating them. Oregon did run a conservative offense under their last OC (Arroyo?) but if you look up his career stats, he threw for well over 10k yards in his college career, and that is with being injured a good part of the year a few years ago. Remember when the Ducks threw their backup out there against the Huskies and all they got was a field goal the entire game? I think Herbert was out several games that year. Anyway, 10,000+ yards in a career is nothing to sneeze at – it’s only been done one other time in Oregon history, and that guy won the Heisman. It’s also only been done once in UW history, by Jake Browning. Add to this that Herbert won a Rose Bowl and got drafted #6 overall…it just seems like he got developed okay.
